Recipe: Iced Matcha Latte

Rebecca ConnorsJune 5, 2024

The iced matcha latte is a modern evolution of an ancient Japanese tea tradition, merging the rich cultural heritage of matcha with contemporary tastes. Its journey from traditional tea ceremonies to trendy café menus worldwide exemplifies the blend of cultural preservation and culinary innovation.

A perfect sweet and lightly caffeinated beverage – it’s our go-to pick-me-up all summer long.

Ingredients:

For the Iced Matcha Latte:

  • 2 grams (about 1 teaspoon) high-quality matcha powder
  • 60 ml (2 ounces) hot water (175°F or 80°C)
  • 180 ml (6 ounces) chilled milk (dairy or non-dairy, oat milk is a great option)
  • 240 ml (8 ounces) ice cubes
  • 10 ml (2 teaspoons) simple syrup or sweetener of choice (adjust to taste)

For the Cold Foam:

  • 45 ml (3 Tablespoons) heavy cream
  • 30 ml (2 Tablespoons) 2% milk
  • 15 ml (1 Tablespoon) simple syrup

Equipment:

  • Bamboo whisk (chasen) or electric matcha whisk
  • Electric milk frother or Shaker jar with lid
  • Sifter
  • Measuring tools (scale, jigger)
  • Tall clear glass with at least a 3″ diameter
  • Ripple Maker II Pro
  • Jungle Blend Ripples Pod Kit

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Matcha:

  • Sift 2 grams of matcha powder into a matcha bowl to remove lumps.
  • Add 60 ml of hot water (175°F or 80°C) to the matcha powder.
  • Whisk using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or an electric matcha whisk until the matcha is fully dissolved and frothy.

Step 2: Prepare the White Foam:

  • Add 3 Tablespoons heavy cream, 2 Tablespoons of milk, and 1 Tablespoon of simple syrup to your jar.
  • Froth or shake (with lid) for 1 or two minutes to create thick, creamy microfoam.

Step 3: Assemble the Drink:

  • Fill a tall clear glass with 240 ml of ice cubes.
  • Pour 60 ml of chilled milk into the glass to create the white layer at the bottom.
  • Slowly pour the prepared matcha over the back of a spoon onto the ice to create a separate matcha layer.
  • Add 120 ml of chilled milk on top of the matcha layer, maintaining the layers.
  • Spoon the white foam on top of the final milk layer and fill to the brim of the cup.

Step 4: Print Your Favorite Design on Your Drink

Step 5: Watch the Print Come to Life

  • After selecting your design, take a moment to watch the magic happen. As the image appears on the foam, the drink instantly transforms into a visual experience.

Step 6: Serve & Share

  • Serve your Iced Matcha Latte drink with its perfectly printed design, and invite your friends to post and share it.
